The 7 Dimensions of Wellness Wheel:
Physical, Social, Environmental, Vocational, Spiritual, Emotional, and Intellectual Wellness.

Seeking balance in 2012 and beyond begins with finding your inner happiness. Understanding what separates you from others is vitally important to your success. So often, we turn to others for happiness. However, having a solid happy core starts with self-reflection. Utilization of the 7 Dimensions of Wellness Wheel provides a starting point for this process.

When working with my clients I inevitably introduce them to the Wellness Wheel. It is a wonderful visual aid and clients usually identify with all or most parts of the wheel. To incorporate a self-reflective activity with the Wellness Wheel follow these steps...

STEP ONE - Looking at the Wellness Wheel and decide if all areas of the wheel contribute to your sense of happiness. This is an all or nothing step. Either you find the area meaningful to some degree or you find no meaning and dedicating time and energy to that area of your life would be counterproductive or meaningless.

STEP TWO - The Wellness Wheel is a reflection of 100% of your time and energy. Think about how you are currently spending your time and energy. Assign each area of the Wellness Wheel a numeric value, a percent, of the amount of time you dedicate to each area on average during a typical week. Keep in mind, when you add up each area's value it should total 100.

STEP THREE - Now that you have an idea of how you are currently spending your valuable time and energy. Reflect on how this makes you feel. Does how you are currently allocating your time and energy feel comfortable? Does looking at how you are spending your time give you an overall sense of wellness?

STEP FOUR - Is your Wellness Wheel in balance? If yes, congratulations. If no, look at the Wellness Wheel once again. Now, think about how you want to be spending your valuable time and energy. Create a new Wellness Wheel that reflects what you believe would bring balanced and inner happiness to your life. Keep your Wellness Wheel in an area that you will see daily and make small steps towards bringing your life in balance based on this self-reflective activity.

The Wellness Wheel is one tool that can be used to assess and reflect upon your own sense of happiness and balance. If you find this exercise useful, consider reflecting on the Wellness Wheel's allocation of your time twice a year. It is a great way to check-in with your inner sense of wellness.
Take care and be healthy,
